The way to a person's heart/mind is through their belly
August 3, 2010 - Justin McIntosh
I’m not usually one for proselytizing or propaganda, especially when it comes to veganism.
So while studies showing the benefits of a plant-based diet and graphic depictions of animals suffering on large factory farms have their place, I believe the best way to reach a person, man or woman, is through their belly.
That’s why I’ve been enjoying the vegetarian/vegan potlucks I’ve been hosting so much. Not that I’m trying to “convert” anyone — mostly I just like to eat good food. And my, oh my has it been good.
The second ever potluck was held at the end of July and 11 people showed up (none of whom were vegetarian, let alone vegan). Each person brought a dish and/or drink to the festivities.
Among the dishes served: A white bean and basil dip, a variation on a Mexican seven-layer salad dip, zucchini cakes, tofu jerky, kale chips, wheat berry salad, falafel, hummus, mushrooms on sourdough toast and beet salad.
Sure, this potluck consisted mostly of appetizers and salads, but no one lacked for sustenance or nutrition. Of course, the mixed drinks and beers we imbibed from 1-7 p.m. certainly helped (or hurt? I don’t know anymore, I’m getting old).
In my eyes, though, the best part about the potlucks, aside from the wonderful food, was meeting new and interesting people, who, like I said, were all carnivores and all highly educated in regards to their diet.
So while they may not share my dietary choices, they were open-minded enough to attend a vegan potluck and that I can absolutely respect and celebrate.
Oh, who am I kidding? Open-mindedness had little to do with it when there’s booze and delectable food involved. Ask anyone there, they’ll tell you.
(PS, if you'd like to come to the next potluck and you live in the Parkersburg/Marietta area, shoot me an e-mail).
